CLASS OF 1985
25th Year Reunion Campaign
Dear Classmate:
Twenty-five years ago, we graduated from that venerable fortress on the Ashley River, known as The Citadel! Hard to believe, I know. This fall, on November 5-7, 2010, we shall descend on Charleston to demonstrate our vitality and regain (or perhaps memorialize) our youth once more.
Before we get on with Reunion–Homecoming 2010 events, let me thank all those that made gifts to The Citadel this past year, and indeed, over the past 25 years. Despite very trying economic times, the Class still gave a combined total of $40,310.83 in 2009, and I thank you!
This year, your gift is more important to The Citadel than ever before. Our beloved alma mater is depending on gifts from Citadel alumni to meet the rising cost of providing a first-rate education to its students. As of June 2009, only $12.9 million of The Citadel’s $87.9 million annual operating budget will come from state funding (less than 15%), leaving tuition and private philanthropy to fill the remaining gap. Most importantly, with more families struggling to provide their children a quality education, The Citadel is counting on loyal supporters to help fund the scholarships that are so critical to our cadets’ futures.
That’s why I am announcing a multi-year, Class of 1985 Scholarship Campaign to run simultaneously with our 25th Reunion organizational efforts. While funding a full Citadel Scholarship is a lofty goal of around $350,000…it is undoubtedly a noble one, and I know the Class of 1985 is up to the task, as always!
To reach our full scholarship funding goals, I am presenting the following fundraising challenges:
“Gold Star Leadership” level of $50,000 – We need 2 donors!
“President’s Club” gift level of $25,000 – We need 4 donors!
“Senior Private’s Club” gift level of $10,000 – We need 10 donors!
“Bulldog Club” gift level of $1,000 – We need 15 donors!
“All-Star Plebe Club” gift level of $500 – We need 20 donors!
“Tailgater Club” gift level of $150 – We need 50 donors!
**Please e-mail me at engelerr@bellsouth.net or call me at 954-558-1985 to discuss how you can help meet our Class goal!
Regardless of the size of your gift, The Citadel appreciates your partnership and does not take your support for granted. We recognize that there are many worthy causes, but we also know that the need for principled leaders is critical for our country right now. The Citadel strives to recruit, educate, train, and graduate students who are highly motivated to resolve the demanding problems facing our country.
If you have not yet made a gift or commitment to The Citadel, please take this opportunity to complete the enclosed contribution card and return it in the envelope provided. You can also easily and securely make your gift online at: foundation.citadel.edu/donate. To contribute specifically to our Scholarship, please flag your gift as “Class of 1985 Citadel Scholar Fund”.

Ken Sigmon was able to secure an initial block of 35 rooms at the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina at Patriot’s Point in Mount Pleasant, for November 5-7, 2010. Our contract rate is $159 per night, plus taxes, and is registered under the booking code of “Citadel85”. You can upgrade to a Yorktown view for an additional $30.00, or a harbor view for an additional $50.00. Base rates last reunion started at $169.00, so this is a better rate than 5 years ago!! If we book the rooms quickly, they have promised to open another block of rooms to us, which we will definitely need.
Please call TODAY to reserve your room
Key reunion activities will include a Thursday evening informal dinner for early arrivals, a Friday morning event, including the Knob PT Challenge, chaired and led by Rich DeVita (now stop laughing and start doing your push-ups and getting your physician clearances in order). There will also be a continental breakfast co-located on campus so our loved ones can watch us pant and flounder. Friday evening will be our Class Dinner with music and events for the kid’s right at our hotel’s beautiful harbor side location. This should be a great venue again for classmates and their family members. Of course, all day Saturday is reserved for the typical on-campus slate of activities, including the open barracks, parade, Coward Hall luncheon, and our Class Tailgate Tent Event. Saturday night following the football game will be left open for classmates to hook up with old buddies and do their own thing in Charleston.
No more USPS mailed letters - we need your current e-mail !!
There will only be one more paper letter funded this year by The Citadel Foundation. All future detailed reunion information, deadlines and registration costs will all be sent out via Class Reunion E-mails in the near future. Please, please… if you did not ALSO receive this letter via Class Reunion E-mail distribution by April 30th, send your current e-mail address to Elizabeth Wyatt at Elizabeth.Wyatt@citadel.edu so she can get you on the correct Reunion E-mail List.
In the meantime, we all hope you and your families are doing well, and look forward to seeing you at our 25th Class Reunion in Charleston on November 5-7th.
